Solve the following inequality : -x < -5 a. x < 5 b. x > 5 c. x < -5 d. x > -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Add x + 5 to both sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did, but I still don't know the answer. Like whether the sign is suppose to be flipped or not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you have a choice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it's A or B ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you add or subtract things from both sides of an inequality you never change the direction. The only time you change direction is if you multiply by a negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or divide.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can solve either by flipping the inequality or by making sure by addition that the variable has a positive coefficient

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So there are two ways you can solve it. Either add x+5 to both sides and keep the direction the same, or multiply both sides by -1 and change the direction of the inequality.

i.e. what polpak said. hello polpak!

hello!
