Okay. So if you have an equation WITH ONE unknown, in this case it is x. We can solve this by using a number of different steps. 3x - 12 = 6 firstly, you agree if we were to '+12' to both sides of the equal sign, the equation would remain equal, if we are doing the same thing to both sides, then the equation should equal the same, right, note we are doing opposites here.. the opposite to taking away is adding. If you had a division, you would multiply. 3x -12 + 12 = 6 +12 Whats this? the -12 and +12 cancle eachother out to give 0. You are left with: 3x = 18 So now, if we DIVIDE by 3 from both sides of the equation we get: 3x/3 = 18/3 The equation is still equal to BOTH SIDES OF THE EQUAL SIGN. The 3's in 3x/3 cancle off and you're left with x = 18/3 Your final answer is: 3x/3 = 18/3 This can be further simplified to give x = 6 This is how we are sure. If there is 2 unknowns in an equation, then anoteher process takes place
