What is it meant by this advice: "When beginning to learn a subject, it is helpful to formulate an organizing idea to guide your thinking". Could someone use an example of a subject to explain what this means? I would greatly appreciate it.
I think they mean get organized. don't just take random notes of everything, have separate folders and sections
I don't think the advice means something as physical and tangible as that. Rather, I think it means that as you're learning a particular subject, it is much easier to learn said subject if you separate your learning into organized ideas. For example, when learning a language, it is not very helpful to learn a bunch of different vocabulary words and this verb and that verb, etc etc. It is much more effecient and beneficial to group what you are learning and organize the new words you are learning into a particular type or tense of verb or a particular gender of noun. That way, you can recognize patterns in what you are learning and apply these patterns to words you may come across that are new.
