what is history all about ? is it just always facts ?
it is mostly facts, but history can be changed over the years to make it a little exaggerated.
History depends on who tells it too. It's not called his-story for nothing. I bet the English don't laud the American revolutionaries like we do here in the States. I also doubt the libveration of Ireland is told positively from the English perspective.
Your right there. I bet a couple of facts have been changed a little bit, but we can't prove anything.
I've heard history is written by the winners and I think it holds true.
It might do, but then what about the bible? That was in Latin 1st, so maby a few translations have been read out wrong a bit...?
My understanding is it started in Arameic(sp?) and went to greek and then latin. I still find it funny that the greek classics were lost to the western world and reintroduced by the arabic nations who had translated it to arab.
Yeah....I suppose your right. They wouldn't change history unless it didn't make sense.
But then again.....
then why do we bother about history so much ? what help does it do for the present and future ? isnt it too much to remember birth dates and death dates of famous personality ? i dont like the idea of learning about the wars too its in what way helpful to keep peace ?
There's a quote by Santanya which is appropriate here: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Santayana The interpretation of this is that successive generations are not aware of what occurred in earlier generations and repeat the same mistakes. Did you know that we suspended Constitutionally granted rights in both 1919 and 1941. We supressed evidence in the case of 1941 before the Supreme Court to guarantee the government got what it wanted. In 1919 people were deprived the right of hearing the case held against them and a right to a jury trial. They were summarily expelled from the country.
It may be true that "History is written by the winners" as they say, but that does not devalue its existence. History also highlights the basic human condition and how we as one species make similar decisions in life throughout thousands of years. A crazy cool interpretation of this idea is a book by a guy named Joseph Campbel called "The Power of Myth". It is a transcribed interview that basically shows that we as humans operate with certain similarities in the way our brains interpret and come up with new ideas. Check it out. The world and everything in it looked a little different after i read that one.
if we dont know the mistakes they made long back i dont think we will tend to even make it so i dont agree with santanya
