Pictures are pixelated. Also, notifications are not stored after they're viewed. That makes it very frustrating if you click on a link and lose everything.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

agreed

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Yes, we do have them archived, but are working on displaying them. I'll look into the pixelated pictures issue.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why not just show the full query in the first place then? Just show the new ones at the top.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Many people have a very large number of built-up notifications at this point, which would make it impractical to show all of them. We need to make some sort of `show more' functionality that lets you show only the number you really want. We also have to be smarter about how we mark things as read.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How are you currently implementing the 'read' functionality? If you don't mind me asking.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Embarrassing though it is, basically as soon as you pull up the notifications pane, the ones for the current group are marked read. As soon as you expand any other group, those are marked as read. Now, as long as you don't navigate away from the current group, you are fine, because the notifications pane is only updated in real time by adding new notifications, not by removing them. But if you load another page, you lose them. The plan is to show the most recent N read notifications + unread notifications sometime soon, with a link to see all of the unread ones (where N is a number we're going to choose).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sounds good. If you're archiving the notifications, you might as well offer them to be displayed xD What kind of servers are you using?

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

We run off of EC2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's pretty cool. I didn't realize those kind of services exist. So do you just install your own database client on top of the VM or do they provide that as well?

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

No, we're running off of an image that just starts with a basic Ubuntu image. We install Java, mongodb, and a handful of other things on top and run our server. Btw, the pixelated images issue *should* be fixed, I believe.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great. I'll let you know if any issues come up. I appreciate the quick response.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

No problem, though I'm not sure a week counts as a quick response :D
