Why study math? (I ask this for the sake of discussion)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To learn about Universe, to learn about everything.........for me to explore new ideas and as a Physics student to discover something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cause math is the mother of all sciences it has a great role in all the sciences just a mother of all siences

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because its interesting >.>

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

helps you think logically

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

also, it's useful with saving money and making the right financial choices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Some of the problems are fun o.O

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

math is a stepping stone to bigger things out there

OpenStudy (amistre64):

study?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I study mathematics because it is a constant process of learning and discovery. Almost as if I'm on a journey to the center of truth, and mathematics is the train, sherpa, ladder, trail, and goal all in one, there is ALWAYS something new to learn, ALWAYS something new to discover, ALWAYS something else to exercise my faculties upon, to ask and to find why it works, something new always to understand. That constant process of learning and discovery is why I continue the journey, because in it I have joy.

Amistre: Study, learn of, work at, why do it?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

of always been under the impression that math just happens :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So u don't have to to parties and tell everyone you suck at math....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the last time i had to study why my bankaccount goes to zero so quickly i developed a seasonal aneurysm :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you can watch Numbers on TV and actually know what he is talking about...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh probably most important (to many people) is that math gives you plenty of job opportunities

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I always wanted to be an actuary...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

it gives me something to do with me fingers :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good point about Numb3rs, estudier!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the thing that i dint like about that show was the way the guy was always like; "you are way to stupid to understand what I want to tell you so let me tell you it in a way that even a baboon can comprehend". Umm if it can be explained easily, then whats all the hullabulloo about?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is why it is considered cool to say "I suck at math". Imagine saying "I suck at (something, bridge building)" So what makes math different?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i suck at drinking milkshakes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Obviously, everyone needs some math. So everyone has to learn some. The real question is how much math does the average Joe (non-professional math person) need to know? I mean, who cares what the degree of a polynomial is?
