Do solutes like sugar or salt have a + or- charge or are they without charge?

Salt for example is made up of two seperate ions, that alone hold a charge, but the charges combined, cancel each other out in solution. Sodium carries a positive charge as it gives up electrons, and chloride is negative as it retains electrons. But together, their charge is neutral.
