what is the largest source of freshwater on Earth?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lake Baikal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is a mildly difficult question to answer. The Caspian Sea is the largest lake in the world, but it is not all entirely freshwater. In parts, it is saline, although not as salty as the oceans. The largest entirely freshwater lake is Lake Michigan/Huron (yes, it's technically one lake). However, the largest SOURCE of freshwater would be the Great Artesian Basin, with 1.7 million square kilometers of area compared to Caspian's 371,000 square kilometers. It contains 64,900 cubic kilometers of freshwater, compared to Caspian's 78,200 cubic kilometers. So if you consider Caspian to be freshwater, than it wins by volume, but the Artesian Basin is bigger by area.

i thought polar ice caps had more fresh water?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

True, but I don't think thats what is counted here since they're not really in water form...I could be wrong though
