Just joined! Besides scrolling through all of the questions or posing a new question (as I'm doing now), is there a good way to search existing questions to get a sense of who's on Problem Set 1 or 2? It would be neat to team up with people who are starting at around the same time!

Not that I know of. I'm not sure there's even a way to search through questions for specific ones, which sucks. Right now just looking through all the questions and picking select ones is the best way to go about it.

Okay, so I'm not crazy. Reading more about OpenStudy, though, I'm starting to think that they did this by design. Rather than encouraging people to search through the archives, I think they want people to value quick responses and to tap the minds of the people who are online simultaneously. Could this be the case?

Yeah, I'm starting to get that sense as well. It's more of a time shifted communication platform then a a way to document group collaboration. So the idea is "have a question, just ask it, see a question, answer it", then a repository of collaborative work. Or I could just be talking out my butt. That happens sometimes.

Using chat can be a good way to get to know people better in this site. The old site was set up more in the way you descibe, but nevertheless it didn't seem to work that well anyway, for me at least despite my best efforts no-one really wanted to study together and this system works well.

Everyone learns at a different pace. Due to time constraints, thoughoughness, programming experience and maths ability, people have their own struggles and pace.

Most people I started at the same time with are further than me now. But people are willing to help and actually it helps your own understanding to help others to so it is a two way street.

I don't think you can search old questions. Too bad, because there is loads there. But it also forces you to make your own and it is more individual to your own troubles then anyway.
