how would i effectively use logos and pathos(appeal to reason and appeal to emotion) in a persuasive essay?
what is your essay about?
'reason' is more appealing if supported by facts.
The above is correct: pathos is about appealing to feelings. This might help for an overview: http://www.rpi.edu/dept/llc/webclass/web/project1/group4/ To help more, as mentioned above, we'll need to know what the essay is about.
come up with a modest proposal, like jonathon swift. http://art-bin.com/art/omodest.html basically, i have come up with a ridiculous solution to a common every day propblem (crime, poverty, overpopulation, health care, stuff like that.) thank you in advance =D
Gotcha. Here's one strategy: 1) Start by defining the problem. Provide some hard facts (appealing to logos), and at the same time mention why it's a problem in a way that pulls at people's hearstrings (pathos). 2) Explain why there's a need to take action. More opportunities here for facts and logical reasoning (logos) as well as emotional appeals (pathos). 3) Now that you have set things up, propose your excellent (or ridiculous solution). Explain why, logically, it's the best course of action. 4) Drive home your point by helping the reader visualize the results. Use some logic as well as some emotional appeals (e.g. Wouldn't you feel much _________ if we were only able to implement my proposal)? 5) Wrap up with an emotionally stirring call to action: what, specifically, can readers do to make your brilliant (or ridiculous) plan start happening? Hope that helps! The strategy above is called the Monroe Motivated Sequence. Works well in speeches, too.
