What is the basic trig function of a graph that starts at 1 on the y axis, then goes down 1 on the y axis at 3 on the x axis. (It's a wave).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cos

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wow how do you know that?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and its not 3, its \[\pi\]

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=plot+y%3Dcos(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhh is it because it starts on the y axis and goes down? And what are each of the tick marks?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nevermind i read it wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cosine goes to -1 at pi, you are looking for a function that "goes down one" at pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where is pi? The curve 's middle is at the third grid mark... ("grid marks are spaced 1 unit apart") What does each of the units mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

probably just 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pi is just a number, happens to be about 3.1415926...etc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so when you say 3 on the x axis, its quite likely you are actually talking about pi which is close to 3, but important to note the difference.
