in y=mx+b how do you find b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y-intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b = y - mx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if they gave u a point u would plug in the values for x and y then solve

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

move the mx to other side m will be neg slope and b will be y=intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well right now i have slope was (-12/7) and points are (-3, 4) and (4, -8)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b = y - mx.... substitute all known values x-coordinate, y-coordinate and m-slope into the right side of the equation then evaluate.... b = y-intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subsititute one of the points for x and y in the equation...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for example 4 = -3(-12/7) +b solve for b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[b = 4 - \frac{-12}{7}(-3)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[b = -\frac{8}{7}\]
