If I am paid 65 % of "A" and only given the amount paid (the 65% number), how can I figure out what the initial amount was?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can cancell an operation with its opposite so if you have x being paid and you get paid 0.65(65%) of it. \[x \times 0.65\] You can cancel it by \[x \times 0.65 \over 0.65\] and get the original value. Please remember that you must do the same operation to both sides of an equation.

To cancel it, then, by: a x .65/.65, how am I getting "a"? because the .65's could cancel out, leaving me with "a" again. That's the number I need. So say I"m paid $56.42 (which is .65 of the total), how do I figure out what the total was?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[0.65x = 56.42\] \[{0.65x \over 0.65} = {56.42 \over 0.65}\] \[x = 86.8\]

Thanks.
