√(3x+1)=3+√(x-4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=5 or 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you solve this problem though?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i ddnt use wolfram lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the results are correct - wolfram confirms it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, it sure does but that doesn't teach me how to solve problems like this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I started on it and got side tracked - looks like jahtoday has it down.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

square both sides: 3x+1=9+3*2*sqrt(x-4)+x-4 3x+1=9+6sqrt(x-4)+x-4 2x-4=6sqrt(x-4) x-2=3sqrt(x-4) square both sides again (x-2)^2=9(x-4) x^2-4x+4=9x-36 x^2-13x+40 now factor (x-5)(x-8) x=5 or 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol its just annoying of a problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's probably why no one wants to answer it. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and we already know the result is correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to do problems like these u usually have to square the equation as many times as there are different square roots so it takes a bit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for the help, jahtoday. still don't get the whole thing but i'm working on it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no prob
