Specifically is a light-year the time it takes light to reach earth from any given star? i seem to be finding so many diff definitions...>.<

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe a light year is the distance that light travels in a year. It doesnt matter if its going to earth or not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No it's a unit of distance. It's the distance light travels in a year.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Unless there is the special relativity business

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So....uhm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its a distance. Not a length of time. Thats it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So assuming the star is N lightyears from the earth, it takes light N years for the light to reach us from that star. By definition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then my statement was false...? sorry...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. False. It was false as soon as you said "Is a lightyear the time it takes..." Because it's not a unit of time. It's distance. Refer to the picture.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh alrighty :]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Further clarification.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahahaha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

loooooool xD
