There are 10 children in a room. The ratio of boys to girls increased when another boy and another girl entered the room. What is the greatest number of boys that could originally have been in the room?

Answer choices: A) 1 B) 4 C) 5 D) 9 E) 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B is the correct answer!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b=no. of boys(intially)..so (10-b)..becomes no. of girls..then..the raito is b/(10-b)...then after addition of a boy and a gilr the no. of boys becomes (b+1) and girls becomes (12-b-1)=(11-b)...so we'v got later raito as..(b+1)/(11-b)..then..i proceeded with hit and trial method!..

whn we use 5 as no. of boys.thelater ratio becomes greater than the intial so..5 is the correct answer!
