http://ce.byu.edu/courses/hs/GEOM-041-101/public/start.htm i need help with number 4

OpenStudy (amistre64):

byu independent studies eh .... there is no #4 on that link

OpenStudy (safia21):

yea i know ugh heres the question in ∆ABC if BC is one inch longer AB, AC is 10 inches shorter than the sum of BC and and AB and the perimeter of ∆ABC is 72 inches find the length of BC

OpenStudy (amistre64):

just a matter of keeping the lengths in order. BC = AB + 1 AC = AB + BC -10 AB + BC + AC = 72 ; now get them speaking all the same variable AB = AB BC = AB+1 AC = AB + BC -10 = AB + (AB+1) -10 AB + (AB+1) + (AB+AB+1-10) = 72; solve for AB and you should be able to get your results

OpenStudy (amistre64):

AB+AB+1+AB+AB+1-10 = 72 (AB+AB+AB+AB)+1+1-10 = 72 4(AB)-8 = 72 4(AB) = 80 AB = 20

OpenStudy (amistre64):

since BC = AB + 1; and we know AC = 20 ... id guess BC = 21 :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

typoed meself ... good answer, bad form lol

OpenStudy (safia21):

its fine thanks :)

OpenStudy (mathsolver):

BC=21 inches
