How can an injury to a peripheral nerve cause loss to both sensory and motor functions?
Think of a nerve impulse as a electrical cord it needs to be attached properly to cause an appliance to work. For instance it has two cords one that goes out to allow sensors to to be picked up, and the other that comes from the appliance and it is needed for a response. In other words both is needed. Lets say the one way of the cord is cut....the electrical impluse can not be completed because it takes two. In other words if the sensory nerve is cut there is no way for the brain to receive the message, and the message or reaction is not sent. I hope this isnt too confusing and it helps.
Nerves send the signal to the muscles which causes them to contract. They can also receive signals such as touch and send them to the brain. If you have a damaged nerve you can't send or receive signals from it so you can lose sensory and motor functions.

a nerve is comprised of multiple discrete axons. some are sensory, (multiple modalities of sensation: heat, pain, proprioception - the posture in space) some are motor. cut a nerve - there goes hundreds/thousands of discrete functions.
