What is the difference between meiosis and mitosis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhm...yeah.

OpenStudy (aroub):

well there is differences ill write a summary for each one and u will see for urself!!

OpenStudy (aroub):

-meiosis prophase 1 : *homologous chromosomes pair, forming a bivalent . (note. the bivalent has two chromosomes and four chromatids.) metaphase 1. *nuclear membrane disappears. * bivalents align at the metaphase plate *spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes at the centromeres.

OpenStudy (aroub):

anaphase 1: * homologous chromosomes (made of 2 chromatids) are pulled by the spindle fibers to opposite sides of the cell

OpenStudy (aroub):

telophase 1. *nuclear membrane reforms * the cell splits into two cells

OpenStudy (aroub):

prophase 2 : * nuclear membrane fades *spindle fibers reform between centrioles * the chromosomes condense thus become visible.

OpenStudy (aroub):

metaphase 2: *the chromosomes line at at the metaphase plate * nuclear membrane disappears *spindle fibers attach to the chromosome at the centromere

OpenStudy (aroub):

anaphase 2: *sister chromatids separate and are moved to opposite sides of the cell

OpenStudy (aroub):

telophase 2 : * spindle fibers disintegrate *cell starts to split into two *a nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromatids *the chromatids become the chromosomes of the daughters cell * four new cells are formed

OpenStudy (aroub):

and a meiosis is a cell division where by one cell divides into four new cells (gametes)

OpenStudy (aroub):

-mitosis interphase: * each chromosomes replicates it forms an exact copy of itself *centrioles(organelles that produce thread like structures, called spindle fibers) duplicate.

OpenStudy (aroub):

prophase: * the chromosomes condense and thus become visible * the two pairs of centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell and spindle fibers start to form between them. *the nuclear membrane starts to disintegrate

OpenStudy (aroub):

anaphase: *sister chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell

OpenStudy (aroub):

telophase: * spindle fibers disintegrate *cell starts to split into two * a nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromatids * the chromatids become the chromosomes of the daughter cell .

OpenStudy (aroub):

and a mitosis is a cell splits into identical cells (mitosis only works for the a sexual reproduction and the meiosis for sexual reproduction)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In mitosis, think "body cells." You end up with two cells that are genetically the same as the cell that produced them and to each other. (One cell, 2n chromosomes -> 2 cells, 2n chromosomes). In meiosis, the words "sex cells" should pop to mind. You start with one cell and, through meiosis I and meiosis II, will end up with four cells that are genetically unique. (One cell, 2n chromosomes->Four cells, n chromosomes).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mitosis= 2 new cells, full set dna meiosis=2 new cells, half set dna each

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mitosis is for the normal cells, meiosis is for sex- like sperm and eggs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the main difference is that in meiosis, an haploid cell (n) is formed and in mitosis, a diploid cell (2n) is formed..hope that helped...
