What steps do you need to take to solve by eliminating the y variable for the following two equations 6x – y = –5 and 8x + 3y = –11?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve one of the equations for y and then substitute into the other equation everywhere there is a y :)

here are the choices I have A)Multiply the second equation by 3. B)Multiply the first equation by 3. C)None of the above. D)Multiply the first equation by –3.

ah, i see. so you have this first 6x - y = -5 8x +3y = -11 ---------------- we want to eliminate they y's by adding the two equations together and having they y's cancel out. So we want one equation to have -3y and the other to have 3y. which choice would make that happen?

is the correct answer B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct! great job

thanks alot!! :)
