find the solution set of the inequality |y+3|<2 show the solution then graph the inequality

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why did it become -2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2<y+3<2 -5<y<-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bnut, do you understand that absolute value means distance?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't agree with your setup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats why im confuse of his answer .....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The way that I have done it is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain where did you get -2<y+3<2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

absolute value in this case means that the distance between a point in either direction is 2 so we consider 2 units to the right of y+3 and 2 units to the left of y+3. That's why the absolute value sign disappears in the second step.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

From there, we just solve for y by subtracting 3 from all sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i understand it, just set it up wrong but the -2<y+3<2 is the correct set up
