write y=6|x+3|-8 as a piecewise function, define √x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Find the vertex. Then find the two lines that meet at that vertex that make up the V. Then make those piecewise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the vertex (-3,-8)?

myininaya (myininaya):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you find those two lines?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Find the y intercept to find one of the lines, then the slope of the other is -that one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMG i want that button in your profile pic!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In other words, find the y intercept, use two points, make a slope, point slope form. The slope of the second is - that one, but remember, its moved as well. So point slope with the vertex.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you use these same steps when you are changing an absolute value equation into a piecewise?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure, I just worked out how to do this in my head. I've never had to do this honestly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-3,-8) dont forget medal

myininaya (myininaya):

f(x)= 6(x+3)-8 for x+3>0 -6(x+3)-8 for x+3<0 -8 for x+3=0
