I don't know which context you are speaking of but generally its when something causes disruption between a sender and receiver

If you are talking specifically about two waves, it is when two waves overlap and the resultant wave is different to the original. One example is destructive interference where two waves are in anti-phase (the peak of one is lined up with the trough of another) and they totally cancel out.
