OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is a foci????

OpenStudy (amistre64):

it is a point in a conic that focuses stuff to it .....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if we were to shine many lasers into a conical mirror, the point that they all intersect is a foci

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then what is a foci of the hyperbolic center???\[x ^{2}/a ^{2}-y ^{2}/b ^{2}\]

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the foci of a hyperbolic is defined as the measures of a and b such that a and b form a right triangle

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a is the vertex; b is the missing vertex; and c is the length to foci; such that a is a leg, b is a leg and c is the lngth of the hypot

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (amistre64):

in an ellipse (cousin of the hyperb.) a is the longest and therefore the hypot; in the hyperb, c is the longest...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

as far as i can decipher the question; the generic form of the hyperbola you give has foci that ride along parallel to the x axis, since the x part is +, and has a center of (0,0): foci are: \[(\sqrt{a^2+b^2},0) \text{ and } (-\sqrt{a^2+b^2},0)\] since "c" is the distance from center to foci ....
