I have a math problem where there is only 1 number in parentheses. What does that mean & how do I solve this? (-8.78) + 6.2

OpenStudy (phi):

In this case, they are superfluous. the problem is 6.2-8.78. you get a negative number s the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the Parentheses don't really mean anything?

OpenStudy (phi):

They mean do whatever is inside first. In this case, there is nothing to do. Normally they would not be used for this problem. Hopefully you are learning about parentheses and order of operations, and this is just a simple example...

We already went thru Order of Operations, but now are on Addition of Rational Numbers. So I was a bit confused since there was nothing else in the Parentheses. Thanks for the help!
