Also, the word "prokaryote" refers to a specific structure that prokaryotes do NOT have that eukaryotes DO. "Eu" means "new/true", while "pro" means "before" andthe structure these names refer to is the nucleus. Prokaryotic organisms to not have their DNA enclosed within a nuclear membrane, while eukaryotes do. If you have ever gotten to look at samples of pro- and eukaryotes under a microscope you will have seen the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell, whereas the DNA of a prokaryotic cell is loose in the cytoplasm.

those cells with its DNA or genetic material bounded inside a nuclear membrance are known as Eukaryotes, whereas those without the membrance bounded genetic material are known as Prokaryotes. Prokaryotes do not have a nucleus, mitochondria, or any other membrane-bound organelles. Etymologically the prefix pro- means before and Karyote means nucleus, moreover Eu- means true.

Most prokaryotes are unicellular, but a few such as myxobacteria have multicellular stages in their life cycles. Eukaryotes may more formally be referred to as the taxon Eukarya or Eukaryota. The defining membrane-bound structure that sets eukaryotic cells apart from prokaryotic cells is the nucleus, or nuclear envelope, within which the genetic material is carried.
