OpenStudy (anonymous):

what makes something a function or not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

passing verticle line test

OpenStudy (owlfred):

Rebecca, did school just start back?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, i'm retaking my regents and I haven't done it all summer.. trying to refresh my memory before i take it again.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a function is described as; for any given input, there is only one output given back

OpenStudy (anonymous):

being a good student, are we?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if the input is "blue eyes"; the output is: too many people to count, so its not a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha yes, I'm trying. but (1) {(1,5), (2,6), (3,6), (4,7)} (2) {(4,7), (2,1), (−3,6), (3,4)} (3) {(−1,6), (1,3), (2,5), (1,7)} (4) {(−1,2), (0,5), (5,0), (2,−1)} those are the answers

OpenStudy (amistre64):

line them up its easier to compare them that way to me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first one is not a function

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(1,5), (2,6), (3,6), (4,7) each x part gives one y part, this is a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you know?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because 2 and 3, that are part of the domain are both pointing to 6

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(4,7), (2,1), (−3,6), (3,4) this is a function as well, since the input is not doubled

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need to know which one isn't a function and I need to know how to do this.. i remember my teacher saying something like if there's 2 of the same number? or something. my teacher sucked this year.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

notice this one: (−1,6), (1,3), (2,5), (1,7) there are 2 inputs for "1" and it has 2 different outputs: this is not a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! yes, that's what it was! thanks :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1:3 or 1:7 , it gives 2 answers for an input of 1,
