The economic growth of 1860-1900 was originally supposed to have been created under a policy of laissez faire; however, the Federal government did much to violate this policy during this period. The government became entrenched in business of all kinds, and consequently, the concept of laissez faire became a thing of the past. This happened through the government’s policy of regulating the price of goods, granting large amounts of land for the development of the railroad, and passing the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. Adam Smith first presented the idea of laissez faire in his book “The Wealth of Nations”. He stated that an invisible hand controlled the business market; and if left alone, an economy best suited to the needs of the people would develop. Since Smith felt that the governmen Hw AP History 1. What events in Great Britain contributed to the settlement of English colonies in America? There were lots of reasons, which .... This stated that no company was allowed to fix prices or establish a complete monopoly over a given industry. However, due to the loose wording of this act, it was not heavily enforced. In fact, many industry tycoons managed to find ways around the new laws by forming trusts and merging companies. These unscrupulous business practices continued up until the year 1900, when the Roosevelt Administration began to fully enforced these laws and decrease the numbers of monopolies. Major examples of this funding are the railroad land grants. In order to unify the westward-expanding country, the government turned to the newly invented railroad. For the Baptists, you might want to look at a Church History textbook, rather than an American History book. That'll give you more of a Christian perspective on things. there's a good one by Justo Gonzalez. You'll want the post-Reformation book of his. Secular books tend (necessarily) to ignore religion. I know more about Methodism than the Baptists, but i'll give you as much help as I can if you need it.
