x-(2-5x)

x-(2-5x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x-2+5x 6x-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you but can you explain the steps?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whenever you have negative outside of a parenthesis , change sign inside the parenthesis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just some example -(a+b)= -a-b -(a-b)=-a+b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think of it as multiplying the terms in the bracket by a -1. -1 * 2 = -2 -1 * -5x = 5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o.k making more sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is called the distributive property of multiplication. Sometimes some simpler numbers make it easier to see. For example, 5(8+2) = 5*8 + 5*2 Either way you work it out, you still get the same answer, but the second version is useful in algebra, of course.

Still not completely understanding. Can someone show step by step

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The only confusing part about your example is that you have x - (2-5x). The coefficient before the brackets/parentheses is assumed to be a 1, so it really is: x-1(2-5x) You have to use the distributive property to multiply the terms in the brackets by -1. x + (-1)(2) + (-1)(-5x) x + (-2) + 5x x-2+5x and grouping the like x terms 6x - 2
