Mathematics 18 Online
OpenStudy (sasogeek):

I have 1 more year of HS (I'm gonna be out of HS in 2012) and I wanna apply for college next year but I'm scared as of yet. this is because I have not so much of grades anyone would call good but I have a ridiculously intense interest for computers and I recently developed so much interest for math. What I'm wondering is... presuming out of my current interest and hard work, I get to make great grades before completing HS, how likely is it that I can get into any one of the best computer science oriented colleges (namely MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Cal Tech, Stamford etc)?

what is your gpa? and how deep are you pockets?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

JUST WORK HARD U'll get through definitely, make sure u avoid procrastination

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

we don't use the gpa system but an equivalent will be a gpa of 2.9 as of last semister/term

If your grades are hurting you will probably need to do some time in a junior college then apply to a university as a transfer student. This isn't a bad thing and should not be viewed that way. You will save money in the long run and it will prep you for the more difficult classes you will have to take at the university. also you might think about taking a sat prep class or act. a great score on those will let you in with a good gpa.

Good luck, and i'm sure there are plenty of other colleges out there where you will get the same education with out the price of the ones you mentioned.

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

thanks a lot :) hopefully my hard work pays off

I also learnt community projects and "extra-ordinary" acts and activities also increase chances of admission... now I'm thinking twice _ I live in africa :/

Hard work will pay off in the end regardless, and you are correct that stuff will increase your chances of admission. remember a public school is going to be easier to get into than a private school. While college is expensive in general some of the schools you would like to attend are really expensive. while having a degree from one of those places could open doors for you fresh out of college it's not going to be as big a factor after you are established in your career so don't get to hung up on the name. Shoot for the stars buddy and good luck on admission.

thanks :)
