Hi all you students out there I am going to be teaching about cell reproduction - any fun activities you have done...what would you like ur teacher to do???
I always found it helpful for the students to actually act out the reproduction. Using string and a large circular area. It allows the students to get up and move around and interact in a fun way with one another while learning.
Make them make little booklets about it. Have them write a general story-like description... plenty of genomes screaming when they're being split... that sort of thing. My teacher made us do that with the digestive system and then read them out loud (I was in 7th grade at the time, so it wasn't a little kid's thing), and it was a major success. Now I can NEVER FORGET what peristalsis are and where your pyloric valve is.
Thanks guys this is for year 10 and 11 kids just to clarify I appreciate your answers so far...anyone got anything else to add?
My AP Bio teacher had some of our class act as chromosomes, some as membranes etc and used string to show the spindle, similar too what Lady Kaye said. I thought it was effective at teaching the principles of the cell cycle, but it wasn't very helpful in differentiating the stages.
Thanks, to be honest I am a little confused about how to use string as suggested above - maybe I am just being a bit dense - can any one help me?
