OpenStudy (trancenova):

Fun Fact #7: Now bird flight is not as simple as one flapping wings and taking off. In order for a bird to take off it must have enough lift to counteract it's weight. The greater the speed of the air flowing around the wings the greater the lift. Most birds get this air flow from running on the ground or water but some birds, like many albatross are not able to generate enough lift to be able to take off. So how do they get enough air flow? Well the bird simply runs against the wind and off it flies. This does of course mean if its a still day, all flights are cancelled.

lol :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope they are not cancelled. Thermals, which are currents of warm air, rise high into the sky so large birds like the albatross use them to gain altitude. they first can gain all the speed they need by throwing themselves off a cliff!

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Lol, or a large tree (in the case of the first few scene's of 'the life of birds'). Though some birds don't nest anywhere near cliffs.. though I'll be darned if I could remember the species
