18x^2y^2-9xy^3 what are the steps to factoring then subtracting and simplifying this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you factor out a 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

_?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's supposedly a polynomial

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does anyone know how to do this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you mean 18x^2*y^2 .... or is it as it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you factor it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so if you've got a power of a power its like multiplying the two in your example the 2 is the power of 2y which is the power of 18x so you just multiply the 2 and 2y and you get 18x^4y - 9xy^3 now if you want to simplify it you can get 9x out of the brackets and you'll get 9x * [ x^(4y-1) - y^3 ] which is not that beautiful.
