Why do I have to write so many essays for college?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Seriously, it's ridiculous....

Maybe it's because they want you to form your own opinion about things. Essays are very important. Punctuation, intelligence, opinion, your discription. How you write tells a person a lot about you the way you do things. Don't get caught up in the essays, you won't have to write them your whole life. Have fun writing, it's ment to express yourself!

In almost every job you have to write something (reports, applications, etc.). Only way to learn to write is to write. BUT: I think that there is a problem in college, and that is that in college you learn to write very long yada-yada :-). Like "minimum ten pages" etc. In work life, your boss and customers do not have time to read many pages, and the real genius is the person who can write short and clear reports. For example, I know a boss in Patria (a Finnish defense industry company) who says that if his employee sends him a report which does not fit on a singe paper sheet, he will send it back :-).

Because you need to learn how to write and enjoy the process and use words to talk about ideas and arguments! Also exams where marks might suffer a marginal loss due to stress are far more enjoyable if you are in regular practice!! In addition writng regularly anyway helps you live your life better by reflecting on experiences, churning out reports etc. So an essential life skill, work skill, study skill that we all have to master and I am no exception.

I am a Univ prof and I can tell you that learning to write well through essays and other means is critical. That means people who can write well, and then speak well do better in life and get better paid jobs etc. Good communication skills are probably the most important thing to learn in college. So pay attention to to your Eng. Comp. instructor!

My sister is a bank examiner, a job that doesn't immediately pop to mind as one requiring lots of writing and good communication skills. Because of her excellent written communication, she has been promoted ahead of her peers. Every job requires written communication--not knowing how to do it effectively might not hurt you, but doing it well will certainly benefit you.
