State the domain and range for x-3y=-6.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please explain!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Because we're dealing with a linear equation, the domain and range are both the set of real numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so can they ever not be a set of real numbers? if yes, then when?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and do i have to simplify to get it into y=mx+b form?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Basically, I can plug in any number for x, which can produce a certain value of y. So this means that the domain is the set of all real numbers. Since we could get any output (for some given input), this means that the range is also the set of all real numbers.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You don't have to, but it might help to see that this is equation of a line.
