why aren't there any cures for genetic disorders

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Genetic disorders cannot be cured because the genetic defect is encoded into a cell's DNA and many encounter it at birth stage so they are born with it. Here's a link : http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081023151851AAJO84W

1.there are some genetic disorders with cure. 2. delivery of the missing protein into its missing compartment is tricky. in the case of proteins/enzymes secreted to the blood stream, in theory it is easier. missing digestion enzymes are the easiest, just swallow the enzyme (encapsulated) thalassemia - defective hemoglobin synthesis - bone marrow transplantation results in a complete cure. enzyme replacement therapy exists: glucocerebrosidase (for gaucher i think) exist - costs between 200,000-1,000,000 per year. if the missing enzyme is expressed in the liver - partial liver transplant may help. as u can see - it is almost never elegant. during the 90's and early 2000 it was the era of genetic therapy - it failed. delivery was the issue/ to get a protein into the cell. to get dna/rna into the specific cell in which it is missing (so it will make the missing protein) - didnt work good enough as a general rule

I have seen a few articles just this week alone discussing this subject. Most of them have named studies that have been successful. They are now experimenting with viruses as a vector for the new "corrected" genes. The viruses inject their genetic material (that we have modified) into our cells, effectively delivering new genes to our cells. Our cells can then reproduce these new genes.
