If you wanted to eliminate the y variable by adding the two equations in the following system, what could be your first step? x − y = 6 −4x − 4y = 10 Add the two equations together. Multiply the first equation by −4. Multiply the first equation by 4. Multiply the second equation by −4.

Multiply the first equation by -4.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

they are all good except the first one really

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the quickest move would be to times the top by -4 tho

Whatever variable you are trying to eliminate, if you're going to add the equations together, then you need that variable to have the opposite coefficient in either equation. So in this case multiplying by -4 makes the coefficient 4 in the first and -4 in the second. So that works.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

multiply 2nd by -1/4 :)
