How do i make a Euler diagram to determine whether the syllogism is valid or invalid? I have never done one before... Some nurses are patient. Tracey is a nurse. (3 dots that look like triangle) Tracey is patient.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Draw a circle to represent the set of nurses

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know its 3 circles... one with Nurses. patients then Tracy is a patient right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

very close, but the last one is just a point and not a circle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the "nurses" and "patients" circles are related how visually?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well nurses are patients

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do they overlap? does one contain the other?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

some nurses are patients, not all

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so because some (but not all) are patients, the two circles overlap

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but one is not completely contained in the other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.. so the 2 circles would over lap and one has nurses and other has patients and then a DOT in patient?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the dot would lie in the nurses circle because it's given that tracey is a nurse

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but because that dot can easily lie outside the patients circle, this means that just because tracey is a nurse, this doesn't automatically make her a patient

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you show this by placing the dot outside the "patient" circle (but inside the "nurses" circle)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

therefore, the argument is invalid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

heres a question.. how would i do the circles on word? im new to word. lol i found the shapes but it wont let me type in either circles

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

probably best to draw in the circles by hand and typing in any words over top of it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have to submit online.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh ok, one sec

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

attached is the venn diagram that you should have gotten, notice how the point tracey can lie outside the "patients" circle, which means that she is not a patient (100% of the time) if she is a nurse.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ty hon..

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

np

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

btw I did that with paint, so I'm betting that ms word has something close to it. If not, then use paint to draw and copy/paste

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i will try that..
