Does AnyOne Know AnyThing About The " American Gothic Lit " ? Please Help If You Do .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is a distinctly American sub-genre of Gothic fiction, set largely but not exclusively in the American South. Like the European Gothic, Southern Gothic employs such elements as the horrific, the violent, the unorthodox, or the supernatural to guide the reader through the story’s action. The Southern Gothic conveys a sense of uncertainty through bizarre twists, violence, and moral ambivalence to create suspense, while also using it to explore the social, political, and racial issues of the American South. It is in this way that the Gothic genre moves away from supernatural events and onto something which affects the reader’s state of mind regarding social issues and experience. Whereas traditional Gothic literature is known for its stark portrayal of sublime terror—a terrifying mixture of extreme good and evil, light and dark—the Southern Gothic is distinct because of a different set of juxtapositions, largely dealing with racial or gender issues, and expressed through a mixture of the tragic and the comic, the serious with the unserious, and the profound with the mundane. Largely, the Southern Gothic is distinguished by its combination of the sacred with the profane, causing it to be particularly disturbing. This degree of the “Grotesque” is used to capture the readers’ attention, as well as a means of drawing attention to the pervasive questions of morality within the literature. At the end of a Southern Gothic novel, the reader is never provided with an easy solution, but is left with an open-ended conclusion
