How many seconds does it take for sound to arrive at the back of a big auditorium if the temperature in the room is 20C and the stage is 39.0 meters away?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does the temperature matter? the speed of sound in air is 330meters per second. simple proportion will give you a good answer. but if temperature must be included then there must be another, more detailed way

temonays's method would give a close approximation... for a more exact answer the speed of sound is sqrt(gamma*R*T), where gamma is the ratio of specific heat for the gas (air, can be easily found online), R is the universal gas constant (wikipedia), and T is the local temperature in ABSOLUTE. Beyond that it's just the simple distance = rate * time.
