OpenStudy (smurfy14):

How do i find the real numbers for 3+yi=x-7i ?

OpenStudy (smurfy14):

The real numbers for x and y

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The real part of 3+yi is 3 The real part of x-7i is x So x = 3 Using the same idea, the imaginary part of the left side is yi and the imaginary part of the right side is -7i So yi = -7i, which means that y = -7

OpenStudy (smurfy14):

so i just divide by i?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

in a sense yes, but just notice that the the left i term has a coefficient of y and the right i term has a coefficient of -7. So because they're equal, y = -7

OpenStudy (smurfy14):

oh ok
