To what extent was Hitler’s rise to power by January 1933 caused by the Great Depression?
Well because of the Great Depression, the morale of citizens of Germany were low but Hitler, known to be a great speaker, promised them food and a better army and better economy. They were captivated by him and believed all his great promises so he rose in power..
Basically, the Great Depression hit Germany hard. Really hard. Coupled with the reparations they had to pay for losing WW1, the economy had gone into a tailspin. The Great Depression drew their economy into total collapse, with inflation at amazingly ridiculous levels (think about what happened in Zimbabwe the last couple of years). As recabecca said, Hitler was a figure that promised to lead them out of this poverty. The German people were looking for figures to blame for this collapse of their nation, so he created scapegoats. His charisma and inspiration made the German people believe in him, and thus allow him to rise to power in Germany.
He provided hope.
