need help ! factor the trinomial by first factoring (-1) from each term 2+5x-12x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To factor the trinomial by negative 1 simply change the signs on each term. -1(-2 - 5x + 12x^2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is an understood -1*(-2...) if that was confusing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so icould switch to be 12x^2-5x-2 and then factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get the -1 part i dont get how to factor after that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Once we factor by the -1 we get -2-5x+12^2 and then we can order this in proper form which would be 12x^2 - 5x -2 Now that we have 12x^2-5x-2 we are in proper form which is ax + bx + c where a, b, and c are numbers To factor this, we multiply a * b which is 12 times -2, which equals -24. Now we need to find factors of -24 that equals -24 and has the sum of -5, which is our middle number So what are factors of 24 and that has the sum of -5?? Factors of -24 that also gives us the sum of -5(which is our middle number) are -8 * 3 -8 times 3 = -24 and -8 plus 3 = -5 so now we know we know that -8 and 3 are numbers we can use for solving this by the grouping method. Now we group 12x^2 - 5x -2 we take our two numbers -8 and 3 and replace the -5 with these two numbers like so 12x^2 +3x - 8x -2 Now we group and factor (12x^2 +3x) (-8x-2) (12x^2 +3x)/3x (-8x-2)/-2 3x(4x + 1) -2(4x + 1) (3x-2)(4x+1) We can check this by using the FOIL method, which is correct
