why do we flip the second fraction when dividing and multiplying
When multiplying you don't flip. When you divide you flip, like 4 divided by 2 is the same as 4 multiplied by 1/2
|dw:1315431771510:dw| \[\frac{1/2}{3/1}=1/6\] \[\frac{1}{2}*\frac{1}{3}=\frac{1}{6}\]
its more of a memory trick that makes the math easier to do
there is no rule that says; flip the bottom and multiply to divide; just as there is no rule that says, cross multiply either
these are tricks that you learn to make the math easier to do
\[\dfrac{\frac{1}{2}}{\frac{3}{1}}\] \[\dfrac{\frac{1}{2}}{\frac{3}{1}}*\dfrac{\frac{1}{3}}{\frac{1}{3}}\] \[\dfrac{\frac{1}{6}}{\frac{3}{3}}\] \[\dfrac{\frac{1}{6}}{1}\] \[\frac{1}{6}\]
your using a useful form of "1" to clear the bottom out.
