This is probably really simple, but physics is not my specialty... Two trains, each having a speed of 26 km/h, are headed at each other on the same straight track. A bird that can fly 52 km/h flies off the front of one train when they are 52 km apart and heads directly for the other train. On reaching the other train it flies directly back to the first train, and so forth. (We have no idea why a bird would behave in this way.) What is the total distance (in km) the bird travels?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So my first answer is 52 km. This sounds completely wrong though. But it takes 1 hour for the trains to collide which means that the bird can fly for one hour. In one hour he can fly 52 km. Any thoughts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct, that's exactly how to solve this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 104kms...???
