when x intercpts y = 0
when y intercpts x = 0

Solve now.

Do you know how to plot a point on an x-y graph?
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
yea
OpenStudy (phi):
for equation y= 3x-1
if x=0, can you figure out y?
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
yea
OpenStudy (phi):
y=?

OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
is it -1 ?
OpenStudy (phi):
ok
now if x=1, what is y?
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
2
OpenStudy (phi):
you now have two x,y pairs
(0,-1) and (1,2)
plot both points
draw a line through them.
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
shouldn't there be more pairs

You can try other numbers, but they will all end up somewhere on the the line. That's why the equation is so useful
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
so how many pairs should there be...?
OpenStudy (phi):
You need only 2. Any 2.
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
so just 2 pairs?
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
is there a reason why there's only two pairs? or can you have more pairs?

OpenStudy (phi):
Yes, just 2 pair. You can add another, for example
(-1,-4), but you will see it is on the same line
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
ok so you need AT LEAST 2 ?
OpenStudy (phi):
more than 2 doesn't hurt, but it is more work.
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
ok
OpenStudy (phi):
Normally people say you need 2 points to define a line

but how do you do y=x on a graph?
OpenStudy (phi):
How would you do it?
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
i dont know
OpenStudy (phi):
Did you do the first equation y=3x-1 ?
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
yea

How?
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
hold on
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
is that right?? :D ?
OpenStudy (phi):
looks good. if you extend the line down you will see it crosses (-1,-4).
Back to y=x
You need 2 points. Set x to a number, and find y (it isn't hard for this one!). Do it for 2 different x numbers to get 2 pairs

OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
ok
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
so i could say y=2 and x would be 2 too?
OpenStudy (phi):
yes. You start by saying x=2
Now what is y? y=x, so y=2
so my pair (x,y) is (2,2)
OpenStudy (mathhelp346):
that one was easy
