In order to achieve maximum results from aerobic exercise, one should maintain one's heart rat at a certain level. A 35 year old woman with a resting heart rate of 75 beats per minute, should keep her heart rate between 141 and 136 beats per minute while exercising. She checks her pulse for 10 sec while exercising. What should the number of beats be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10 seconds is 1/6 of a minute. So the beats need to be adjusted accordingly. \[\frac{1}{6}(136,141)\approx(22.6,23.5)\] Rounding it should be 23-24.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand where you got 1/6 from>?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are 60 seconds in a minute.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10 seconds * 6 = 60 seconds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the total beats represent 60 seconds. We need 1/6 of the beats per minute.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh duh sorry, so ihave to times it then right to get 23-24 , that would be your answer right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

23-24 is the total beats in 10 seconds. If you times those numbers by 6 you'll be around 136-141 beats per minute.

Keep in mind rounding will make our numbers slightly off. The reason we round is you can't have a partial beat.
