Fun Fact #33: Have you heard of trap-door spiders? I'm sure you have but here is their interesting life cycle. The poor old male lives until maturity with its own little burrow but dies after mating with a female spider (or many, depending on how good it is at escaping). The female, on the other hand, may live up to about 20 years (though older cases have been recorded), that's quite awhile when you think about it. Not only that the female may stay in the same burrow for her lifespan.
They build a burrow and as they grow they widen the burrow, the cap (trapdoor) can sometimes show rings from this widening. Interestingly not all 'trapdoor' spiders actually build trap doors. The depth of the burrow varies depending on the species, but they can be quite deep, like the Melbourne Trap-door Spider that dig burrows around 40cm's.
Okay, well decided to start giving my sources (especially since a few of you have asked where I get these from :P Lol, 3 of you in one night hehe) Source: http://www.csiro.au/resources/Trapdoor-spider.html http://australianmuseum.net.au/Trapdoor-Spiders and http://museumvictoria.com.au/discoverycentre/infosheets/spiders-found-in-victoria/melbourne-trap-door-spider/ Sorry if this one's not as exciting!
