How do I write an equation with y = |x| ? Problem: 4 units up, 2 units right

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

y = |x| y = |x| + 4 ..... 4 units up y = |x-2| + 4 ..... 2 units right

What if I have to find the vertex of (-3,0) ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the vertex of y = a|x-h|+k is (h,k) So (h,k) = (-3,0), which means h = -3 and k = 0 So the absolute value equation is y = a|x+3| If a = 1, then equation is y = |x+3|

So is the equation y = a|x-h|+k is to find the vertex?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's the general form of an absolute value equation
