Solve v^3+4v^2-4v-16=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

v=+2, -2 or -4, factor by grouping

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you factor it though?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[v^3 + 4v^2 - 4v - 16 = 0\], right??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

v squared comes out of first two terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- 4 comes out of last two

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this makes a (v+4) in the new terms created

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have v^2(v+4)-4(v+4)=0 then Idk what to do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok now do you see that (v+4) is in both terms, factor it out so you have (v+4)(v^2-4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! Ok. Thanks :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure
